Probably cut down from a larger seal leaving a tab that has been drilled to allow it to be suspended from a cord or chain. Birds were common motifs on early seals. Made of walrus ivory the subject was expertly carved with fine tools. Its place of manufacture is unknown, possibly British. On loan courtesy of National Museums Scotland.
