Object Detail

Made from cowhide, this shoe sole has an elongated toe. Shoes of this type usually date from late 1100s to 1300s. Many of the soles found in the moat at Caerlaverock Castle appear to have been cut with a knife, and the instep was sometimes cut with a very angular manner. Recovered from the moat during excavations at Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries and Galloway from 1955-1966.
