Object Detail

Evidence of medieval spectacles are very rare. This fragment of a bone spectacle frame was found in the Great Drain at Melrose Abbey. Known as rivet spectacles, it would have had another identical frame that would have been rivetted together where the remains of the hole can be seen; this would allow the wearer to support the spectacles on their nose.
These spectacles are probably 1300s and are one of the earliest of their kind found.
