Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll, is depicted fast asleep when his jailer and the Castle Governor enters on the morning of his execution. Argyll was imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle for his support of the Monmouth Rebellion against James VII in Scotland, 17 April 1685. He was executed 12th June 1685. Oil on canvas, Edward Ward (1816-1879), mid 19th century.
