Object Detail

Most of the prints in this album date from before 1800 and depict 17th-century European old master paintings. The painters whose works are reproduced include Raphael, Rubens, Claude and David Teniers the Younger. The prints are consistent with a widespread British taste for certain kinds of European paintings, which was seen as the mark of the well-educated and well-travelled gentleman. This print after Teniers is by the French engraver and publisher Jacques-Philippe Le Bas and dates from 1775. It shows peasants eating, drinking and dancing to the sound of a hurdy-gurdy played by a man standing under a tree. From the Dunimarle Collection. On loan from The Mrs Magdalene Sharpe Erskine Trust.
