This knife has a corroded iron blade and round wooden handle. The blade has a tapered tang. (the part of the blade that extends into the handle).This type of knife was common before handles with riveted side plates appeared in the 1350s. It was discovered during archaeological excavations of the moat From at Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries and Galloway, 1955-1966.
