Object Detail

This straw picture depicts Castle Stalker, a medieval tower house on the coast of Argyll. It was made in about 1790 by a French prisoner of war from straw, which was one of the few materials readily available in Edinburgh Castle. The prisoner was allowed to earn money as a fencing instructor and gave the picture to one of his pupils who had showed him great kindness.
