Object Detail

Well designed for sleeping in a blackhouse, this bed was cosy, draft-proof and private. Made largely from locally gathered driftwood, it also made effective use of available materials. Heather covered with locally woven blankets would have been placed inside it to provide a springy mattress. A ceramic hot water bottle could be slipped under the bedclothes if extra warmth was needed.
