Object Detail

One of the three padlocks that secured the great chest in which the Honours of Scotland were placed when they ceased to have any ceremonial role following the Act of Union in 1707. This and the two other padlocks were broken in 1818 after Sir Walter Scott successfully petitioned the Prince Regent to reenter the Crown Room and find the Honours of Scotland. They were found as they had been wrapped in linen cloth inside the chest.
