This decorated iron padlock is that ‘by which the inner iron door was secured’ to the Crown Room following the Act of Union in 1707 when the Honours of Scotland were locked away for some 100 years. In 1818, Sir Walter Scott successfully petitioned the Prince Regent to re-enter the Crown Room and discovered the Honours of Scotland wrapped in a linen cloth inside a wooden chest.
