Object Detail

Used as a secure store for the Honours of Scotland when they were no longer required following the Act of Union in 1707. The 'Great Old Chest' remained unopened until 1818. By this time no keys could be found and three locks had to be forced open in the presence of the Royal Commissioners. Only one of these locks survives. Now on display in Edinburgh Castle.
