Harpoons like this were used by Scottish whalers to catch whales in the Arctic in the early 1820s. Attached to a long line of rope this would have been thrown or musket-fired from a whale boat, a narrow rowboat that was launched from the whaling ship when whales were spotted. Marked 'ALPHEUS', this would have been used to identify the whaling ship that was eligible to any whale found with it. Inscribed. 'R Flinn' and dated '1823' on one side.
