Object Detail

Shaped like a 17th century lantern, its dome being a bell, this was the first type of mechanical clock used in high status houses. It would have been mounted on a shelf allowing room for a pendulum and chains carrying weights to power the clock and striking mechanism. From Stirling Castle, unknown maker, late 1600s.
