Object Detail

This is the 11th-century grave gravestone of a Norse settler on Iona called Fugl. The runic inscription along the right hand edge translates 'Kali the son of Olvir laid this stone over his brother Fugl'. The Norse first came to Iona as Viking raiders in the late 700s, but by the time Fugl was laid to rest many Scandinavians had settled in Scotland and converted to Christianity.
