Object Detail

Ticket for a seat on Leith Pier to see the landing of George IV, 15 August 1822. Handwriting on the back of the ticket suggests that the bearer 'JH' was also entitled to 'One Bottle Sherry'. The Incorporation of the Master & Assistants of Trinity House played a key role in making arrangements for the reception of George IV at Leith as part of the pageantry devised by Sir Walter Scott. This was the first visit to Scotland by a reigning monarch since Charles II in 1651.
