Object Detail

This cannonball was found at Tantallon Castle and dates from the late medieval period.
Iron cannonballs are created in the same way that the lead musket balls are made just on a larger scale. Iron is melted down in an extremely hot furnace and poured in to a ball-shaped mould. Once the iron has cooled the mould can be removed and the cannonball is made. Iron cannonballs superseded stone ones.
