Object Detail

Iron ingot or 'pig' made at Bonawe Iron Furnace, Argyll. Establised in 1753 by Richard Ford and Company from Cumbria, the site of this furnace was chosen to exploit the extensive local woodland used for charcoal production and the water supply for driving the bellows used in iron production. In its heyday, the furnace produced 700 tons of pig iron annually. The furnace closed in 1876.
